Review of Lake of Fire (2006) by Colin M — 24 Jun 2008
It's a perfect documentary. the best I've seen this year. It takes the ambiguous questions of abortion, the history behind abortion's both controversial sides, and asks more questions then it asks, a truly provacative movie. It has footage filmed over the past 15 years, a project that must have taken immense dedication to make. At times hard to watch...(it does show actual abortion footage) it is downright horrifying on all sides of the issue. Whether it be the blowing up of innocent doctors and abortion clincs, the religious right fanatics supporting the violence on abortionist, the graphic footage of a dead fetus being washed down a sink, or watching the emotional trauma that unfolds on screen after a young woman has had one. Filmed in black and white to symbolize an issue that is seen in the eye's of both side's most die hard advocates, and yet is grounded in immeasurable shades of grey, it deserves to be given the title of best documentary of the year.
Tony Kaye's filmwork here will remind alot of his other fictional classic American History X, as well the the beautiful score done by Anne Dudley. Seriously, watch this movie if you've ever wanted to ponder all sides to the abortion issue...and realize that no one is right, and no is wrong.
