Review of Lake Mungo (2009) by Rick B — 25 Dec 2014
It's certainly well made, but isn't the whole movie a blatant twin peaks ripoff? SPOILERS AHEAD... I mean: deceased sixteen year old alice palmer (or laura palmer, if you wish) experienced a premonition about dying.
she hid a sexual double life and a diary, the existence of which neither her family, boyfriend nor best female friend were aware. it takes place in a town called ararat, the name of a mystical mountain in the bible.
another word for mountain? peak. the name of the 'psychic' therapist hiding the fact that he had sessions with her (sound familiar?) is ray, as in ray wise, the actor who played leland palmer, aka the killer, aka 'bob', aka the father who drowns his sorrow in work afer his daughter's death.
the mother's receiving supernatural signs from her daughter, telling her more needs to be investigated. and the list goes on. so tell me: am I crazy, or are these just way too many parallels to consider it a coincidence? so yeah: technically efficient, but storywise it's extremely derivative.
