Review of Laid to Rest (2009) by Greg F — 09 May 2009
Laid to Rest is a terrifying story of a young girl who wakes up in a casket with a traumatic head injury and no memory of her identity. She quickly realizes she was abducted by a Deranged Serial Murderer and in an isolated rural town she must survive the night.
Laid to Rest is a standard low-budget splatter flick introducing a to-be-iconic killer, ChromeSkull. What's really cool about this film is this character.
Alhough director-writer Robert Hall doesn't provide us with any backstory, ChromeSkull is really interesting to watch. With a metal skull mask, a shoulder-mounted video camera and numerous electronic devices that work in his favor, he's scary as hell.
The deaths are very inventive, even if they look a bit artificial, and the movie has creepy atmosphere containing some really suspenseful scenes. On the minus side, Laid to Rest suffers from the main sin of slasher movies: characters behaving completely irrationally.
Bobbi Sue Luther is also annoying in the leading role delivering superficial, wooden performance that doesn't really fit this movie. Despite these flaws, Laid to Rest is an enjoyable slasher movie that recalls the heyday of the genre when Mike Myers and Leatherface were at the peak of their game.
