Review of Ladyhawke (1985) by Tom R — 23 Mar 2011
Ladyhawke is such an oddball 80's fantasy flick that I'm still not sure what to rate it. Rutger Hauer is perfectly cast as a knight, Michelle Pfeiffer is beautiful as always, and I'm intrigued by Richard Donner's work (Superman, Lethal Weapon).
Then there's the insane 80's synth soundtrack that clashes with the medieval setting and the amiss pacing of the movie, which feels like there were scenes deleted or bad transitions. With its interesting story (two cursed lovers: guy turns into a wolf at night, girl turns into a hawk during the day), there are moments when you're excited, like certain action and fantasy scenes, but then there are moments when you feel like nodding off! Ladyhawke is a bipolar movie, but I enjoy enough of it to recommend it by a small margin.
I think I'm being lenient to it because it's an 80's movie, which is a different era when cheesiness was acceptable.
