In one of the extras on the dvd a woman involved with the movie said the movie wanted to show perhaps the real side of the role of women in mid-19th century Britain as opposed toe Jane Austen's Britain.
This movie, based ona 19th century Russian story,is tough. "Lady Macbeth" seeks out revenge of an arranged, loveless marriage with a vengeance. In the end it is clear no one will ever again make her a victim or make her pay for her choices.
This movie is tough and tough going but I couldn't stop watching it.
