Review of Lady in the Water (2006) by Steven P — 13 Apr 2010
I am a fan of M. Night Shyamalan, and I really wanted to like this movie, but his storytelling seems amateur at best. First of all, the movie lacks focus. The mythology is scattered and nonsensical: there is a mermaid living in a pool, a man with half a muscular body, and strange monkey people things? It is all just a bit silly.
shyamalan tries to weave an complex tale but falls flat and just makes a mess. There are too many 'coincidences' and every character just seems a little to eager to accept and believe what is happening to them.
The movies relies on a talk-heavy exposition and lacks in suspense. I never felt any tension but rather found myself rolling my eyes on several occasions. In fact, the only positive thing about this movie is Bryce Dallas Howard.
I enjoyed her in the village and I enjoy her in this movie. Howard exudes a gentle grace; frail yet beautiful, she seems almost ethereal. Despite working with a sub-par script, she managed to give her character life.
However, despite all of its flaws, there is a certain level of intrigue. Its definitely not the worst movie made; its just poorly executed.
