Review of Lady Day at Emerson's Bar & Grill (2016) by Kyle B — 15 Mar 2016
Audra. McDonald. A masterclass in acting. Just devastating, funny, chilling, and transformative as Billy Holiday. McDonald is going to be entering a bloodbath on an Emmy season for Lead Actress in a Mini Series/Movie to the point they should give all the presumed nominees a statue of their own.
It's shot very intimately with close frames on Audra while she sings but also in a way to make you feel as if you are sitting in her audience. It is a little weird filming style for an HBO Movie but it still works.
The costumes are great, the music is phenomenal, the production design is great, and the writing is excellent. This is one of HBO's strongest films and the best since The Normal Heart. A must see.
