Review of Lady Bird (2017) by Sam%20 I — 22 Jan 2018

I don't understand why everyone is fawning over this film. I am a big fan of this genre and while I did find it entertaining and well acted for the most part, the story was wholeheartedly underwhelming.

For nearly the whole film I kept waiting for the plot to pick up, but nothing really happens (and not the satisfying kind of "nothing really happening"). Lady bird is laboriously trying to be something akin to Perks of Being a Wallflower, The Spectacular Now, Almost Famous, etc.

but unlike these stories, Lady Bird's characters are underdeveloped and deeply predictable. The mother/daughter relationship (which is supposed to be a central facet of the film) rings corny and over-exaggerated in its angsty disharmony making the "supposed to be funny moments" a bit forced and the "serious moments" a bit trying.

Maybe it was because I had heard so many good things about the movie going in that I had had higher expectations but I really don't see what all the hype is about. I like Saoisrse Ronan a lot and this movie wasn't awful, but it was disappointing to see in theatres.
