Review of Lady Bird (2017) by Avital G — 12 Feb 2018
I was beyond excited to see this movie. These types of movies are my guilty pleasures. I was highly disappointed by this film.I'm not saying it wasn't beautifully filmed. The camera work and lighting and cinematography was all wonderful.
Even the directing was pretty great. Even the acting was good! The issue I had was the narrative. This is about a girl who I just could not relate to. If her mother was in any way horrible, I would empathize with Lady Bird.
But her mother was pretty much a saint. Lady Bird seemed like a spoiled brat to me who had absolute NO respect for her elders or even her friends. She was horrible to her brother, her best friend and her parents.
She was obsessed with losing her virginity before college and beyond obsessed with "escaping" Sacramento. Have you ever been to Sacramento? It's an amazing place. It is beautiful. And yeah, she realizes it's not so bad.
She gets to college and she isn't any different. She still lies, still wants to get with guys and still kind of a brat. Does she tell her mother she loves her? Sure. Does she really change as a person? No--not that I saw.
After leaving her best friend behind to pursue sex and popularity, she comes crawling back with not so much as an apology. She was insufferable, in my opinion, from start to finish and it took away so much from the amazing direction and editing that it ruined the whole movie from me.
