Review of Lady Bird (2017) by Asma N — 06 Mar 2018
Greta Gerwig impresses with her directorial debut with the indie darling Lady Bird. The cinematography features steady pans of scenery in the Sacramento area and suburban house-life. She utilizes fast paced jump cuts that seamlessly blend together this highly enjoyable coming of age drama with quirky modern humor that will surely be refreshing for most audience members.
The delightful soundtrack combines jangling indie rock and modern era alternative music with the occasional reference to some past sonic love that caresses the screen and keeps you engaged.
The star of Lady Bird is definitely Saoirse Ronan, who captures adolescent insecurity and uncertainty for both her future career wise and in regards towards love. Ronan is very expressive and eats up the scenery with her longing stares and witty comebacks. The entire cast of side characters all stand out as wonderful additions to Lady Bird as Gerwig's writing shines with relatable characterization along with complex, well developed arcs.
This film is a breezy 93 minutes and never overstays its welcome. I suspect most movie goers will be pleasantly surprised by Lady Bird's abundant charms. Lady Bird is worthy of all its praise.
