Review of Lady and the Tramp (1955) by Ali S — 01 Mar 2010
What a beautiful little film! Lady and the Tramp might just be my favourite Disney movie. I'm sorry that I waited so long to watch it.
There's not too much that Disney did wrong with this movie but there's a great deal that he did right.
What was very striking to me was the beautiful landscapes that provide the backdrop for the film. They really set the stage for an old-fashioned small town. They drip of the theming you find in Walt Disney World's Main Street USA. In the same way, Lady and the Tramp transports you back to the quieter, more innocent time that may never have really existed. And it does so with ease!
The animation itself is so gentle yet life-like. When you consider that this was all done by hand, it is even more impressive. The voice actors really bring the characters to life. The story itself is precious yet very appealing to adults in almost a Pixaresque kind of way. The music is unique and perfectly matched to the rest of the film. I love the use of Peggy Lee in the composing, singing and voice work.
All in all, I think this was an incredibly underrated film in the Disney collection. I would take it over the beloved Snow White any day and think that it is of superior quality to films such as Peter Pan, The Little Mermaid, and The Lion King.
