Review of Labyrinth of Lies (2014) by Steven W — 04 Jan 2016
This German film concentrates on the revelation that Nazi sympathizers protected those who were involved in concentration camp war crimes. Those criminals could be a baker in your neighborhood or a postal worker who kindly brings the mail.
Made in the classic Hollywood tradition, this film makes you cheer as Alexander Fehling's young lawyer seeks to find the prosecution of thousands of Germans and the evil Dr. Mengele. His portrayal scratches the surface, but his hero is one that elicits cheers.
He has a girl who loves him and a secretary who admires him. Yet this film seems to revisit many plot devices used in Imitation Game from last year. In the end I wished that the focus was not entirely on the process, but on the psychology of those who kept their evil doings a secret.
The movie could have deeply torn open the psyche of those individuals instead the curtain is drawn down a bit too soon.
