Review of La Vie en Rose (2007) by Shan S — 20 Nov 2010
What were they thinking ? severely "décousu" as most French critics must surely have said.
Unstitched in the tongue of The Bard or in modern parlance all over the place.
Some gruesome mistakes.
1. Designer streetkids who look as if they have just taken 2 hours out of their busy prep school schedules.
They surely would not look like poor kids in 2010 Paris.
But in 1930 Paris they just look ridiculous.
2. Overplaying the rough language ( ok she was not born with a silver cuillère in her mouth we get it ) but to make Marion Cotillard talk like this was again you've got it...ridiculous.
3. AS for La Cotillard well she is a stunningly beautiful actress/woman and the real life Piaf was no munter so was there any point in spending all this money to make her look like the hunchback of notre dame in most scenes; you can clearly see the prosthetics and they are badly made.
Just a thought: she could have played it straight. Most people know what the real-life Piaf looked like or 2 clicks on a computer would show them; and to use Cotillard's beauty would not have hurt the story.
Were they again trying to make her look "street" "poor" "lowclass".
Looks to me like a bad idea : a lot of wealthy folks playing pretend-poor.
Not successful.
Despite all this Marion is an exceedingly good actress even with the monkey-suit.
I cannot wait till someone makes a respectful film of the life of Piaf. It sure deserves it. Her story IS amazing,...
