Review of La Vie en Rose (2007) by Rosemary L — 09 Jan 2010
Oh my! I have this DVD from years gone by and never watched it and then it appeared on BBC4 and I couldn't resist!
The lead actress is simply outstanding and I'm under the impression the songs were actually sung by Edif Piaf but the dubbing is so excellent if this is the case that I should never have know unless told. What an amazing voice!
Edif is portrayed as being extremely petite and as she gets older and arthritis kicks in her tiny body buckles as she insists on taking drugs to combat both the physical and mental pain, the latter suffered as a result of her married lover suddenly being taken from her life after a relatively short time together.
I really identified with her mental pain in this respect and completely understand when she tells her group of followers that she will never have him, that he can phone home and do whatever it takes to keep his family together...whatever it takes to keep him happy...that's all that matters! This is her sacrifice if it means keeping him in her life! I don't condone this behaviour and completely empathise....sniff...
Ah never to b young & nia-eve again! That's all I ask.
I sobbed my heart out becaue as a working class broad who never lost her roots, she was a true star...an artiste! And they just don't make 'em like this anymore...sob...
