Review of La Strada (1954) by Luke P — 24 May 2008
"La Strada" is an italian, neorealist work about a sad, silly young woman named Gelsomina who loves life and maintains a childlike nievety through various hardships shw runs into as a circus performer on the road.
Throughout the film she tries with hopeful perseverence to love the hardened and unloving man Zapano, whom she was sold to at the beginning of the film. It takes her mental breakdown and ultimate death to bring Zapano to redemption, though it comes at a time what it is too late for him to return her love.
