Review of La Orca (1976) by Brian R — 04 Jan 2015
No one does black comedies better than the Brits, and Guy Ritchie's Snatch is the blackest of black comedies. Bumbling criminals, unscrupulous unlicensed boxing promoters, American diamond hunters, merciless gangsters and pikeys all violently and hilariously clash in the name of a priceless stolen diamond.
Couple all these lovable characters with Ritchie's off-the-Richter scale directing, a script that'll rip apart those too tightly wound, and a record-setting use of the F word, and Snatch oozes attitude and machismo.
Don't think Snatch get 5 stars because it's merely a good time. Although that's the bulk of its brilliance, it's also creative, unique, well acted and has some of the best editing ever.
But all those quality ingredients get their teeth kicked in by indecipherable slang, and cockney humor. Basically it couldn't be more British if it tried.
