Review of La Notte (1961) by Sergio M — 13 Aug 2010
I prefered l'avventura, but really enjoyed this as well. again, antonioni and his very characteristic shots and his characters who actually behave a bit as if they just couldn't be bothered. I love how their lives seem empty even when they are actually telling us they are successful people.
in this story, however, the incommunication between them is even more tangible, I love the party scenes and how each one goes their own way, both knowing or fearing what the other was doing (or feeling forced to do).
two almost antagonistic characters united by their infidelities (whether they are unfulfilled or not is unimportant) and their lack of communication.jeanne moreau is, again, wondrous, and so are mastroianni and vitti.
the final scene, with the sunrise after the wild party, with all its metaphors is simply genius.
