Review of La La Land (2016) by Ryan K — 16 Aug 2017
La La Land is a great film but has decent acting from Emma Stone (5) and Ryan Gosling (6). These actors were the worst parts of this film. The lighting has personality on some scenes when you focus on one of the characters. The lights would fade either Gosling or Stone. The story of this film is that these two character, who both want to hit it big in Hollywood. Emma Stone wants to be an famous actress and Ryan Gosling wanted to be a famous musician. They meet each other at this party and kind of build up this relationship that they have now. I'm not going get into spoilers'. So that's all you get from me and go see the movie, if you want to know the ending of the film.
Referring back to the cinematography, there are many long takes without editing in this film and this is sprinkled throughout the movie. I did not like Emma Stone, to me she was not even acting but pretty much telling us that she wants a Oscar me and I liked Gosling . He had a good performance. I loved him when he would talk about jazz to Mia (Emma Stone). I didn't think Emma Stone's what is so terrible that it's unwatchable, but she felt like an interesting character. I extremely like when she explains film to Sebastian ( Ryan Gosling). I also love that this film went back to the film history and used a CinemaScope, which projects on the screen a full scope of the film with tons of detail of the film. This film does have it's fair share of problems. First off, the beginning 30 minutes are a drag to get through. I almost stopped watching the film. Also, there's a song in this film that felt, thrown in and it it didn't work with the whole film. As well as, in the beginning of the film there was a tracking shot of people dancing on freeway and felt you didn't need that in the film. It did nothing for driving the story forward with the two main characters.
The editing for this film is pretty good, but nothing special. The director of La La Land , Damien Chazelle puts his passion into this film but personally I prefer his Whiplash movie over his La La Land movie. Movies like La La land, are Oscar bait movies. These types of movies that come out at the end-of-the-year. Will usually get nominated tons of awards. In 10 years, I think this movie will be remembered , but not for its acting.
Give La La Land 8/10.
