Review of La La Land (2016) by Simeon M — 21 Sep 2017
La La Land is a fresh breath of revival in an otherwise lost genre of film. The fact that a musical that specifically hails the cinematography styles of old film while retaining the element of modernity to remain relevant... truly a breathtaking film.
First, let me give kudos to Stone and Gosling for wonderful performances (to include the song and dance.) While not as poised as professional Broadway stars may be, the authenticity is there and gives it the "special something" it needs. I am particularly fond of all the song and dance sequences, especially the epilogue, because it just has the magic that Hollywood once cultivated so readily but now has largely forgotten. It is enthralling and larger than life, and I will gladly add this to my collection of films, right next to "Singing in the Rain" and "An American in Paris." It really is that good.
