We all know how 21st century Hollywood is. There are regular superhero movies where you feast your eyes upon the visual effects, there are generic animated movies with the critically acclaimed ones being the 2 cartoons from Disney and an amazing animated flick that no one saw, there are the average actioners, thought-provoking dramas, etc.
La La Land provides a fresh change of pace by offering a pleasantly retro feel with the visual style, sets, shout-out to films released in the 40's and 50's among them Casablanca and Rebel Without a Cause and even the score.
Which is odd yet fresh since the film takes place in the present day. The score and musical numbers are amazing. I'll probably be listening to the soundtrack tons of times on YouTube until all of them entirely invade my head.
Personally, my favourite one is City of Stars. Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone have great chemistry together with the film having tons of charm. Seeing Gosling defending jazz in one scene proves just how, like many people who go to work in Los Angeles, determined he is in what he does.
Even if you have no interest in films such as The Sound of Music and My Fair Lady, this film's soundtrack is enough to make this film worth watching as it serves as a proud throwback to the old Technicolor musicals from the early 20th century.
La La Land is a wonderful treat that becomes unexpectedly heartbreaking by the third act and provides a fresh change of pace from all the big blockbusters Hollywood dishes out nowadays. *awkward silence accompanied by crickets chirping* What, were you expecting a witty La La Land/Moonlight joke? Sorry, nothing to see here, folks.
