Review of La Haine (1995) by Rich D — 30 May 2008
This is the story of three teenagers in Paris who are from a council estate and ethnic minority backgrounds, and their battle with the racist police after one of their friends is killed by them.
I found the film extremely pretentious (filmed in black & white for no obvious reason, for a start) and lacking in any kind of sense of direction. The three characters are treated badly, but then they also behave badly - this isn't a good model for an anti-racist film, in my opinion.
The ending (the very last second of the film), however, was brilliant.
