Review of La Haine (1995) by Paul W — 07 Apr 2012
Taking Scorsese to the Banlieues of Paris, La Haine is thankfully hip, street and cool enough to speak for the world it portrays, achieved through neo-realism casting of real-life people. Theres more than a street tale here though - stunning timeless black and white photography; inventive, magical moments (the taxi-driver speech and the scene overlooking the eiffel tower stand out).
We are told from the start how this is going to end, but that doesnt make the endin any less shocking with its grim predictability.
