Review of La Dolce Vita (1960) by Karen C — 31 Jul 2008
La Dolce Vita should be renamed "La Vita Disparata" (The Hopeless Life). Marcello is quite charasmatic...but the character he plays has no spine or integrity...he wavers between the choice of a meaningless life of decadence and futility and searching for significance as a serious writer.
In the end, his choice is disappointing...but maybe slightly more common? Hey, he's no Gregory Peck, if you know what I mean. It takes much more energy and courage to be an idealist in a society that settles for mediocrity and self-indulgence.
