Review of La Dolce Vita (1960) by Maria S — 20 Jul 2009
A spectacular morality play which has lost none of its relevance in today's celeb obsessed world. This is yet another film which set as many fashion styles as it set out to demolish, encouraging people to sit in cafes on the Via Veneto in an unironic attempt to emulate 'the sweet life'. The expression 'paparazzi' comes from a character in the film - that is how influential a film this is.
Marcello Mastroianni defines a generation of cool in his black sunglasses and the women in this film are all simply beautiful. The iconic image of Anita Ekberg in the Trevi Fountain is one of the most famous images in all of film history.
Glorious.
