Review of Kwaidan (1965) by Chris C — 27 Jul 2007
I think I'm supposed to like this way more than I did. I, however, find the artifice distracting; most of it is filmed on beautifully decorated soundstages, albeit without the intent to blur reality, creating a picture book beauty that, for me, lacks the shadowy fissures that I crave from ghost stories.
Had it been shot in real locations, I may have been able to tolerate its grindingly slow pace. Still, the Japanese aesthetic (they REALLY know how to use their widescreen framing) is a joy to behold.
