Review of Kung Fury (2015) by David B — 07 Jun 2015
If you've ever watched an 80's action film then you'll instantly recognize many of the tropes present in Kung Fury. This film is about action and the plot is few and far between, what ever plot points that are present are simply a parody of the type of plot points present in 80's films (e.
G. the police station 'you cant fire me, I quit' scene, for example). That said, it does feel like the movie is lobbing the tropes on too heavily, for me, anyways. This movie is half an hour long but it could have easily been made into an hour and a half film and each scene would have actually had *more* impact because the current format of the film doesn't give you enough time to fully appreciate the humor before it fires the next trope at you.
I think you'll either appreciate the film for what it is, a solid lampoon of 80's cinema or you'll be put off of it like I am at just how fast and cut down the film is. That said, I highly recommend anyone to look for the music video 'True Survivor' which is the film's theme, it has David Hasselhoff in it and showcases some of the most over-the-top scenes from the film in an ultimate expression of 80's nostalgia.
