Review of Kundun (1997) by Appu B — 17 Apr 2010
"Kundun" depicts the life of the Dalai Lama from his discovery in the village of Amdo at the age of 2 to his exile from Tibet to India. The film begins with a band of incognito lamas searching for the 14th emanation of the Dalai Lama described through visions of the Holiness's regent.
They find the boy and test him by having him identify objects that belonged to him in his previous life. He passes with flying colors and is taken to Lhasa to be nurtured in the company of monks and teachers until his coming of age.
As time progresses, the Dalai Lama takes strides in learning and maturity. He eventually becomes the leading political and spiritual leader of Tibet. Only shortly after he becomes very active politically and spiritually does Communist China start to invade Tibet.
Sticking to his of peaceful and spiritual protest/action, the Dalai Lama encourages nonviolent resistance and leaves for India. He is still living in India today and is waiting peacefully to return home.
