Review of Kundun (1997) by Shaun K L — 15 Nov 2010
This was one of Scorsese films I've wanted to see for a while. I really enjoyed this film, I'd seen a Documentary on tibet before I watched this movie and I think I got more out of it the film by doing so. What I like most about Scorsese is He make all kinds of different films not sticking to one genre. I found this a fascinating and well make film, I really like seeing other cultures different to mine. It's so sad what happened to the tibetians, the power china had and still has in unbelievable and the fact that still now the Dalai Lama isn't allowed back to tibet. Mao wasn't a very plesant person either, that is the most dangerous thing a person with power who things what he is doing is right. I think the Dalai Lama did the best he could for his country but in the end china was to powerful.
Another thing that made me think was that Buddhism is fundementally not much different to the other religions around the world. The key themes I think are Love and Compassion they are two of the most important things in life. I also thought it was amazing how they never doubted that the two year old boy was the 14th Dalai Lama the reincarnation of the Buddha. they are a very spiritual wise people.
I think Scorsese really captured the culture and the story. I agree with a review this film didn't have Scorsese's edge or normal techniques, but he showed that one he could tell a simple story and two he could do something different to test himself.
Anyone who like history or Scorsese should enjoy this little film.
