Review of Kundun (1997) by Arseniy V — 05 Sep 2007
It feels rushed. I keep wanting to pause and soak in the man's experience for a while, but the story just keeps cascading forward. I think Mr. Scorsese may have felt the same and added numerous point-of-view shots to the picture in order to provide some counterbalance.
Ultimately though, he must have felt this effect to be a fitting metaphor for the life portrayed here, rather than a flaw. Perhaps he's right. Or perhaps it was just the lesser of all the evils in front of the director in making this film.
Either way, this is the closest I come to anything in the way of a gripe. All in all: a powerful film with a distinct life of its own, no bullshit.
