Review of Kubo and the Two Strings (2016) by Tyler G — 09 Sep 2016
Great visuals but really lacks good characters (apart from the two sisters, which were amazing!) and story. LAIKA really needs to learn how to apply their animation skills to a good story, not a crappy story to amazing animation.
Sure, the animation quality is superb, but we've seen that in multiple animated films over the past few years (Finding Dory, The Wind Rises, The Tale of Princess Kaguya, Piper (Pixar short) etc.).
The only time I have seen Laika apply their unique animation style to a great film was in Coraline, which wasn't even a story of theirs, it one by the legendary Neil Gaiman! It was even directed by Henry Selick, the director of Nightmare before Christmas, arguably the greatest stop motion film of all time! I really disliked the Box Trolls and Paranorman, but after hearing all the positive reviews about Kubo, I actually thought that Laika had made something almost (if not as) good as Coraline! But I was wrong, it' just like their other films with no good plot.
