Review of Kubo and the Two Strings (2016) by Mark T — 17 Jan 2017
Great mixture of American story telling and Japanese samurai worriers.
Kubo is very entertaining movie of Japanese samurai and ninja .The movie is in Japan. A boy kubo learns story telling from his mother. After her deaths, his journey with Monkey and Beetle made him very strong samurai.
Hazo is a small origami samurai.I guess that his name ,Hanzo, is from a famous ninja,Hattori Hanzo. We can still see his legacy in Tokyo Imperial palace, Hanzo mon gate, Hanzo gate is from his name. If you lived in Tokyo, you might remember a subway line, Hanzo mon sen.
Regarding of cultural accuracy of Japan,it was amazing. When Hollywood made movies about Japan, I often saw some confusions of Japan and China. The movie describes Japanese village, festival and music correctly.
The movie used Tanko bushi song .The song is used in obon dances.Toro nagashi is a tradition in Japanese obon days. People float toro paper lanterns down a river.Lanterns are icons of Japanese obon.
Japanese believe that people can meet dead ancestors during obon days. It seemed that Kubo could meet dead ancestors.
This is a great movie. You should watch it.
