Incredibly well-crafted genre entertainment, Dougherty's script takes no prisoners and is fearless in how it attacks the darker parts of the season, while finding new, innovative ways to make the magical seem terrifying.
Beyond great effects and impressive use of magical realism, the cast is game, consistently giving a wink and a nod to the audience, allowing the film to be both terrifying and fun.
