Review of Krampus (2015) by Isadore H — 04 Dec 2016

Krampus is a Christmas horror movie, and I could already hear the groans when the concept was announced. The last thing we need is Christmas to be ruined by some B-grade horror flick that might just be awful.

After I saw it, I can say that Krampus is really a solid horror film with some flaws and pacing issues that drag it down. First off the acting is all pretty good, but varied very much between characters.

The plot is stereotypical, but still straightforward enough to appreciate. Krampus himself is intimidating and genuinely pretty scary, but the movie focuses on his minions that do his dirty deeds, with varied results.

There were also a ton of really unlikable characters that really didn't make me care what their fate was, but in the beginning, they made for some great humor. The ending I thought was very lukewarm, not bad enough to hate but not good enough to actually like either.

However, there was enough tension and creepy imagery to make for an acceptable horror film, although buyer beware. I really felt like an R-rated version should exist instead of this PG-13 thing that we have, but it's not bad, and I had fun with it.
