Review of Kong: Skull Island (2017) by Amber F — 24 Mar 2017
It's not as epic or emotionally charged as Peter Jackson's 2005 King Kong, but it's a good monster movie - superior to both "Jurassic World" and the recent "Godzilla.".
Most of the characters get little development, but the A-list cast do what they can to try to elevate them beyond the thinly written archetypes they are. And to be honest, I was pretty unengaged in the movie during the first 25-30 minutes that took place before our characters reached Skull Island.
But once we finally get to Skull Island, it's a non-stop thrill ride filled with some pretty intense encounters with the creatures that inhabit the island. There are new monsters introduced known as "Skull Crawlers" that, despite having a ridiculously stupid name, manage to be quite intimidating.
If you hate Kong, or movies where giant creatures kill people and smash things, this movie won't be for you. But if you are into this sort of thing, I highly recommend it.
And by all means, SEE IT ON THE BIG SCREEN!!! This is not the kind of movie you want to stream or rent at Redbox. The most impressive aspect of this movie is the sheer size of Kong!
