Review of Kong: Skull Island (2017) by J S — 02 Apr 2017
Kong: Skull Island is one of the best monster movies I've ever seen. Vogt-Roberts knows he has to go big or go home and he went big...a massive 100 foot dirty ape to be exact. It isnâ(TM)t yet another version of the â~king comes to New Yorkâ(TM) story.
.and that's OK. It's controlled chaos, served with clarity, craft, fun and a gargantuan ape who steals the show. The films stunning effects, cinematography, great pace and tight directing leave you with white knuckles and thereâ(TM)s the right blend of excitement and humor in the script to keep you glued.
It's a CGI extravaganza that is a feast to the eye and a prime example of how a big named cast and great visual effects can still sell, even if the film lacks story and heart..and also lacks great acting from those big names.
BUT...it works on a pure adrenaline level of excitement, fully aware the audience isn't there for a story. The only big name who isn't there for more than eye candy or hopes of ticket sales is John C.
Reilly, who is nothing short of marvelous. He singlehandedly steals the film away from every other non-Kong character. While I still hold a special place in my heart for the original 1933 King Kong, I'm learning to make room for Kong: Skull Island.
It's visual eye candy, sophistication and excellence are in place of the fairytale magical quality that endeared the original to generations of filmgoers. This film doesnt try to out-compete its predecessor's heart or message but instead delivers 2 hours of mighty fun equivalent to a Kong chest beat and roar.
Like Kong himself, this film must be seen to be believed. Either you want to see a CGI gorilla beat the hell out of creatures, or you donâ(TM)t, I'm not judging you. All Hail The King.
