Review of Kong: Skull Island (2017) by Movie K — 03 Apr 2017

Another King Kong movie within quite a short period. But this movie is quite good on its own. Taking place in Vietnam War era. In the start, 2 WW2 pilot (USA and Japan) who crash their plane on the island continue to fight and were "greeted" by Kong.

John Goodman & Corey Hawkins are from a group Monarch that monitors unknown island and monsters. They convince the senator to let them have 1 last expedition to explore Skull Island. Samuel L.Jackson is a Colonel that lead the helicopter squadron.

He is actually dying for action since the war is coming to its end. Tom Hiddleston is an expert jungle tracker who is a former Captain in British Special Forces. Brie Larson is the anti-war journalist who got the chance to join in this expedition.

There's always a storm that engulf the island and therefore needed the military help to bash through. When they pass the storm, they start dropping seismic bomb to survey the ground. King Kong immediately appear and smash all the helicopters.

Samuel round up the survivors and goes in search for a stranded Captain. Goodman reveal the truth of the expedition. He was serving WW2 when his ship were attack by a monster. So from there on he work hard to find proof monster exist.

The seismic bomb were to lure monster coming out. Tom, Brie and few others meanwhile are on their own. Tom's side saw a village and met John C.Reilly, the WW2 survivor from the beginning. He welcome them to the village.

In there they know more about the local story. Kong is like a god to them, protecting them from a larger and fearsome lizard creature that live underground. Kong's parents were killed by the lizard king and he is the only one left.

The seismic bomb were drop and it make Kong angry and worry the lizard king will emerge again. John manage to build a small boat using his plane parts but it never succeed. Samuel is trying to find the soldier and also revenge on Kong.

The Captain was kill by a lizard. The boat was finally able to run and they cruise down the river in order to reach the extraction point. The 2 groups met up and Samuel insist to find the Captain. John advise it as bad move since thats where lizard ground gather and Kong parents killed.

They reach a mass skeleton ground of the lizard and were attack by them. Somehow they are impervious to bullets. Tom try to save a young soldier and lizard aim them. Brie save them by throwing a lighter at the ground which exploded (the ground is explosive material) and kill the lizard.

Samuel insist to continue and Tom found the dog tag of the dead Captain. He still want revenge on Kong. Tom lead the others back to the boat. He and Brie saw Kong at night and know he will be walking into the trap and return to stop Samuel.

At the ambush, Kong is injured badly. The lizard king appear and fight Kong. Kong smash Samuel before he can activate the explosion. Tom and Brie run to the river and try to get the boat. The fight follows and Brie falls in the river.

Kong save her and finally kill the lizard king. Samuel never intend to reveal the truth of this island and plan to kill Kong for revenge and secrecy. Goodman is dead as well along with several others.

Brie and Tom are lock in a room which is actually Monarch HQ. Corey, Tian Jing greet them and reveal more secrets. They found more monsters. So this will lead to a sequel and probably to Godzilla series since the monsters are from there.
