Review of Kong: Skull Island (2017) by Colby H — 16 Apr 2017
Now everyone knows about King Kong. He's one of the most iconic movie monsters of all time. There are 4 main films in this franchise, 3 of them being remakes, but this one is more of a retelling. This film is about a group of scientists who find 'skull island', they begin to explore the island only to be caught up in survival against what monsters are on this island. Kong: Skull Island is mostly a fun movie. The biggest flaw I had with it is the character development. Most of the cast felt like they were there just for the sake of being there. John C. Riley's character is the only person with a backstory, yet it felt dull, along with pretty much everyone else. (John Goodman, Samuel L. Jackson, Tom Hiddleston, Corey Hawkins and so forth). Now lets talk about the good this movie has. The film is pure eye-candy. The cinematography is visually stunning, not to mention the living things on the island that are bought together with perfectly blended CGI. Like I said before, the story is a retelling of the classic story. It is a truly unique one as well, and just because it has a different plot, it doesn't mean that it lacks nostalgia. It has the same feel we all have when we watch a film like this. This is the King Kong movie for a new generation of fans.
Overall, this is a decently entertaining movie that has a good story, but could've had better character development.
