Review of Kolya (1996) by Andy S — 08 Nov 2008
Unpredictable its not... but enjoyable yes!
Louka is a stony faced old man... troubled with life and an ever increasing debt... things take a turn and he is offered a chance to make large amounts of money, more than enough to rid him of his debt problems and even enough to buy himself a car!
The catch... he has to marry a young Russian girl so that she may obtain Czech citizenship thus allowing her to work as a translator in Germany.
Louka is wholly against the idea, a 55 year old bachelor and is determined through principal to stay that way.
Unfortunatly he realises he can no longer cope and reluctantly agrees to the scam.
A few weeks later news breaks that his "wife" has emigrated to Germany, leaving her 5yr old son Kolya behind...
His wife's mother is too old and frail to look after the child and therefore he becomes the responsibility of grumpy old Louka...
What unfolds is a beautiful story as the old man grows a bond with the young boy and they become the best of friends...
