Review of Knowing (2009) by Mike N — 18 Jun 2014

It starts out as quite an intriguing mixture of Sci-Fi Thriller and disaster movie with aliens (yay!) but it becomes too entangled in its attempt to merge the whole apopalyptic shebang with some Shamalyan search for meaning within the universe's grand scale reflecting itself in the minutes of our everyday lives.

Are you already confused and bored, well, so was I when I managed to go passed the films big reveal. Most of its cosmological mumbo-jumbo is utter rubbish and simlpy inaccurate as far as the scientific facts go and we are not presented with a treat to true science-fiction (as in SCIENCE) fans such as Donnie Darko and/or Moon had been.

Nicolas Cage is a living legend and he delivers many one-liners, faces to die for and awkward acting mishaps, all of which make this film a B-movie with all its glorious script fails. The supporting cast is solid, but nothing to write home about.

Canterbury manages to be only a limited nuisance as compared to Hollywood's usual brats. All in all, a below-par sci-fi thriller with a great premise but it fails to focus its intentions on the right spots and meddles away all the narrative velocity it might have gathered in the first third of the opus.
