Review of Knocked Up (2007) by Shane M — 15 Feb 2014
Finally, another rom-com drama that uses little or no clichà (C)s. Knocked Up focuses on Ben Stone, a lazy marijuana smoker who meets a news broadcaster named Allison Scott, and he has sex with her, causing her to get pregnant.
After finding out, he starts learning how to mature and be responsible, as well accept that he's going to be a dad. Judd Apatow once again succeeds at making a film after The 40-Year-Old Virgin by blending romance, comedy, and drama, nailing it in the process.
Apatow does an amazing job at writing the movie, which is undoubtedly hilarious and thought-provoking, as well as smart and silly. He avoids most of the romance clichà (C)s to offer a fresher take on romance.
He also directs the film perfectly, finding the right settings, situations, and time of day to shoot each scene, expertly captured by cinematographer Eric Alan Edwards. The best part about is Knocked Up is the acting, and each cast member portrays their characters flawlessly, including Seth Rogen, Katherine Heigl, Paul Rudd, Leslie Mann, Jason Segel, Jay Baruchel, and Jonah Hill.
The film focuses on the themes of maturity, growing up, getting married, having a family, having kids, what you want to do in life, the true meaning of love and deciding if this person is right for you.
The film also has amazing character development, and a longer length that other films in the genre that allow more complexion, and a focus into the background and current issues of the characters. A must-see for people who are sick of clichà (C)s, or just want to see a modern comedy that is actually funny.
