Review of Knight of Cups (2015) by Ashley G — 05 Apr 2016
Paaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaiiiiiiiiiiinnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn stakingly slooooooooooooooooooooooooow. I gave it two stars and not 1 just because the cinematography is flawless. However, as a director, Malick squanders the talents of his actors, cinematographer and composer, not to mention the brilliant art installations, dancers and everyone else in the film by injecting his superficial quest for life narrations and cliche words of wisdom.
He tries his best to understand life, emotion and human nature but lacks the depth and heart to be able to give meaning to this film. He manages to display some of the most beautiful locations and talented people in the world but it's as if they're being served to a spoiled child who has nothing to offer in return and doesn't even really appreciate them.
The most offensive part about this movie though, is the sexism and in the fact that every woman in this film is a romantic interest to the protaganist, most of whom are much younger, very thin, and unrealistically gorgeous.
Aren't we past the point where beauty is the only thing that we're looking for in our female characters? Last remark: how many times do we really need to see Christian Bale dip his feet in the water at the beach? ::the biggest eye roll of my life::
