Review of Knife in the Water (1962) by Chris V — 01 Apr 2009
My initial complaint is about the dvd itself...i read that Polanski himself wrote the subtitles, but there were long chunks of dialogue that went without any translation...after I bit I was able to figure out that it was probably just idle chat or whatnot, but it was still frustrating because I felt like I was missing details.
..and I think that took away my enjoyment overall, because the movie had to be so nuanced and subtle in the characters, their words and their tones...but besides that, I think the movie just didnt live up to my expectations.
..maybe I wanted it to be a bit more sinister, a bit more edgy...the acting had ups & downs, some moments werent realistic, others were perfect...the writing, like I said, I felt I missed out on parts, and also felt other parts might've just lost something in the translation.
..but it was beautifully shot, from the nice wide open ocean shots to the cramped cabin shots...
