Like a shark below the waterline, the true meaning and importance of this film lies just below the surface, the tension and suspense hidden behind the carefully controlled mask of the character's faces.
Polanski's debut film is an excellent work, a true arthouse piece. It is a wonder how such a simple piece could be so complicated.
