Review of Knife in the Water (1962) by Tom M — 30 Apr 2010
Polanski's feature-length, Polish language debut manages to be both languid and tense simultaneously. His sly direction of this somewhat Pinteresque drama draws out the absurdity inherent in masculine posturing and class pretensions.
Charged performances, including by Jolanta Umecka as the enigmatic Krystyna; the first of many beautiful female leads in Polanski films. The music from Krzysztof Komeda is excellent, working in perfect tandem with Jerzy Lipman's lyrical photography.
Unsentimental and probing in the best European way.
