Review of Knife in the Water (1962) by Geonard Y — 23 Aug 2006
Directed by Roman Polanksi.
Starring Leon Niemczyk, Jolanta Umecka, Zygmunt Malanowica.
Among the prestigious body of work of Polanski, ÒKnife in the WaterÓ is one of his tamest. It seemed to want to be a thriller but its not and its too mellow to be a melodrama. Some would call it a honest ÒstudyÓ of something, but even low-budget movies should have a story worth telling with quaint cinematic value. Honestly, small budget movies should try to make it up with an engaging story. Without calling it lackadaisical, IÕd rather watch ÒDead CalmÓ anytime.
Best Scene: Runaway sailboat under jazz music.
