Review of Kit Kittredge: An American Girl (2008) by George R W — 12 Aug 2009
Usually, a film that is "G" rated is either completely insipid or mediocre, however in the case of Kit Kittredge: An American Girl it is heartwarming, intelligent, and able to captivate the attention of not only the young, but also the young at heart. The film is based on the American Girl series of dolls/books. This of course centers on Kit Kittredge, a spunky girl whose main wish in life is to become a journalist. And when the Great Depression hits Cincinatti, OH Kit springs into action.
The film does exactly what Kit tries to achieve with her newspaper columns, it shows the Great Depression through the eyes of children. If Nim's Island was the definition of a mediocre children's film, this is its oppostie. Abigail Breslin turns in what is in my opinion an Oscar Nomination worthy performance as Kit Kittredge (as opposed to her undeserved nomination for Little Miss Sunshine).
Bottom Line: **** See this whimsical romp as soon as you can.
