Review of Kiss of the Spider Woman (1985) by Chris W — 14 Nov 2008
Yet another case of a film I'd heard plenty of great things about only to be somewhat disappointed upon finally seeing it. Kiss of the Spider Woman, to me, shows its age repeatedly throughout its duration and feels like the product of the 80's that it is.
I won't deny the strong performances of Raul Julia and William Hurt, the latter who won an Oscar for his work here. The film's minimalist style makes it feel boring and repetitive, and the first big reveal takes an hour to come about, although to the film's credit I certainly didn't expect such a "twist" if one could call it that.
Kiss of the Spider Woman was good, but nowhere near as great as many seem to have made it out to be.
