Review of Kinky Boots (2005) by Martin T — 17 Sep 2010
If you can ignore the dodgy attempts at the local accent where the Aussie guy in the lead role gets closest but the rest all end up somewhere between Nottingham and Brum as well as the use of Long Buckby station to represent Northampton (population 200,000), it's not a bad film.
The blurb said 'Calendar Girls meets Priscilla'. The true story it's based on benefits from the added fiction of Chiwetel Efior's excellent Lola. Maybe they could have been braver and pushed the fantasy of Lola's life a little further.
Nevertheless, it can rightly take its place alongside The Full Monty and Calendar Girls in inspired-by-true-events British comedies.
