Review of Kingsman: The Secret Service (2015) by David W — 27 Aug 2015
Fun, stylish, slick, original, smart, ultra violent and great cast...
This was goofy but also serious enough to care about the characters. Developed a good foundation for a rebellious spy-to-be. Abusive family life in dingy little town created realistic undertones and empathy for the lead.
Contrasted with shiny visuals and sweeping landscapes the training seemed otherworldly.
The action was brilliant! The church scene was more violent than Tarantino but hilarious and justified. The choreography was genius and was shot so clearly you could actually appreciate and believe the movements. Probably the best action sequence I've seen.
This movie took risks in all areas and strayed from mainstream concepts anywhere it could. It wasn't afraid to be adult, politically incorrect and having flawed characters and yet unlike many other movies that take chances, it made the characters likeable, it maintained cohesion and flow, and remained respectful not to self indulge or get too chaotic for too long.
It wasn't quite perfect though wasting the female lead by using her simply as a tool rather than an interesting character with some kind of emotional interaction with the others.
