Review of Kingdom of Heaven (2005) by Anthony A — 18 Dec 2010
DIRECTOR'S CUT: An excellent and at once stirring and devastating film about the crusades. I like films that make the audience think about certain ethical and moral issues. This film forces the audience to ask the questions, among others: How can one be a beacon of goodness and participate in the system of the world in such amoral times? Is it possible, and what does it take, to atone for past sins? The film (director's cut, NOT the theatrical version) is a near-masterful blending of action, drama, religious and political commentary, and character study.
The story-telling is a bit stodgy at times, and Orlando Bloom's acting leaves much to be desired, as he seems relatively passionless. Everything else, including the cinematography and music, is quite artsy and sublime.
The theatrical version might not be so good, but the director's cut is great and shows (mostly) what Ridley Scott intended. Recommended.
